Colon Hydrotherapy

Also referred to as a colonic, Colon Hydrotherapy is a colonic irrigation that gently cleanses the colon by filling and emptying it with warm and cold filtered water, returning the colon to a healthful and vigorous state. A very natural and holistic approach to improved health.

Why is Colon Hydrotherapy Needed?

The intestines are virtually ignored by most people as a part of the body which needs utmost attention to maintain good health, although this system functions as an essential foundation for all other systems in the body. If the foundation is weak, the rest of the structure will be affected.

In addition to toning the colon, colonics help increase circulation, calm the nervous system and bring relief from headaches, food allergies, backaches, indigestion, colds and many other disorders. Most importantly, the body is better able to metabolize good sources of nutrition. Overall, a Colon Hydrotherapy session can help patients suffering from headaches, food allergies, backaches, indigestion, colds and more.  Perhaps the most common conditions for which patients seek help with colon hydrotherapy, other than to improve their general health and immune system (because the intestinal health is so vital to many or all other health systems in the body), are: irritable bowel syndrome, cancer, chronic constipation, chronic functional abdominal pain, persistent “indigestion”, suspected intestinal parasites, Crohns disease, and Ulcerative Colitis.

Why The Woods Gravity Method vs a Machine?

The Woods Gravity Method, the original method of Colon Hydrotherapy, uses gravity instead of machines and electricity.  It is a manual therapy that allows for dialogue between the client and therapist to provide an interactive experience.  Feedback from most clients reflects a preference for this gentle procedure, as it is easier and more relaxing than they anticipate.  We encourage you to do your own comparison.

What to Expect At Your Colon Hydrotherapy Session:

After the therapist performs a rectal exam, the instrument, called a speculum, is lubricated and gently inserted into the rectum. The water enters and exits your body to gently bathe the colon as the therapist performs abdominal massage techniques. A very specific technique was designed by the center's founder, Carolann Kummins, using custom massage techniques, reflexology, and acupressure points working with the abdominal cavity to stimulate healthy function.

During the session the therapist explains the anatomy and physiology of the colon, discusses nutrition and lifestyle habits that can improve the clients overall health.

The Gravity Method is a "closed system," which means your elimination exits through a closed tube.  There is a clear segment of the waste tube for optional viewing and discussion of what is released. We provide each client a sealed, disposable speculum and tubing which is discarded after use.

What is the difference between Colon Hydrotherapy and a typical enema?

An enema is simply a forceful purging of obstructing stool; it does nothing to address the cause for that obstructing stool to begin with, nor does it restore any normal intestinal functionality regarding regulated contractions or nutrient absorption as it does not impact the adherent “plaster”-like toxic contents on the walls, as colon hydrotherapy does.  To use an analogy, it’s similar to pharmaceutical medications being given for high blood pressure, without any means to investigate or address underlying causes for the high blood pressure.

I’ve had a colonoscopy, and was told it was “normal”.  What would colon hydrotherapy add to my better health?

Colonoscopies are intended to simply screen for disease.  They are incredibly effective for removing pre-cancers (polyps) or identifying other visually obvious unwanted disease entities.  What they do *not* do, however, is address anything regarding functionality.  Colon Hydrotherapy seeks to restore not only the regulated intestinal contractions for optimal waste removal, but also removes the toxins from the walls to optimize nutritional absorption from the foods we eat – colonoscopies can address neither of these.  More particularly, individuals who suffer from intestinal dysfunction with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or IBS-like symptoms can attest to their benefits and the improvement colon hydrotherapy provides when normal functionality is restored.

What is the connection between colon hydrotherapy and nutritional changes (in particular, raw foods)?

The average American diet is comprised of excess refined, greasy or processed foods which, along with heavily cooked starches, dairy, eggs and meat, can leave a coating of slime on the inner walls of the colon much like plaster on a wall. Over time, the slimy coating increases in thickness and can become "sludge"-like, until there is only a fraction of the space through which matter can pass, thus clogging the colon, just like a pipe gets clogged.

To work at its full potential, our system needs clean-burning foods that do not clog the colon. This means a diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables, sprouts and nuts, eaten in the right combination. Raw foods act as a magnet, an "intestinal broom", to help keep waste matter moving along the intestinal tract.  Once we remove the initial impaction or intestinal wall plaster, raw foods help to maintain intestinal health to optimize subsequent nutritional absorption with other foods.

What is happening to most individuals’ digestive systems?

The typical foods people eat actually clog and "starve" the colon, instead of furnishing nourishment. A starved colon may let fecal matter pass, but it is unable to carry on the final digestive process, further contributing to the accumulation of toxic waste and serious health issues. It is not enough to simply change one's diet, for unless the existing toxins are removed properly and safely through colon hydrotherapy, the toxins can be reabsorbed.

Will colon hydrotherapy be useful for me?

Today's diets often contain extensive quantities of refined, processed foods, high in saturated fats and low in fiber. Poor colon health is derived not only from eating these foods, overeating, and ignoring the call to eliminate; it is also impacted by stress, allergies, and medications, among other factors. The colon contains the largest concentration of bacteria in the body. Waste material allowed to stagnate alters the proportion of friendly bacteria to unfriendly bacteria, disrupting the balance of microorganisms essential to the health of the colon and the body in general. Symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating, or gastrointestinal pain may alert you to colon distress. In such cases, it may be necessary to consult a physician. We believe that Colon Hydrotherapy is valuable in minimizing the effects of both dietary and environmental stresses and toxins that bombard us on a regular basis and can lead to immune system imbalances. That portion of the immune system residing in the intestine may rejuvenate once toxic waste materials are removed. In the case of a serious heart condition or acute inflammatory conditions of the colon such as diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease, your physician can best determine the appropriateness of the procedure.

How often should someone undergo colon hydrotherapy?

The frequency and intervals of treatments depends on the individual’s health condition and purpose for receiving treatment.  For general health prevention, the frequency may be seasonal (i.e. spring and fall), up to every other month, depending on age.  For those receiving treatments for a specific illness, the frequency depends not only on age, but also on the type and frequency of other treatments (i.e. fasting or IV therapy).
